The Bible begins with these words:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”— Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

If we reduce this sentence to its subject and verb, we are left with two simple words: God created. Those two words reveal something very important. Man did not create—God did.

Most books in the world focus on what people have done, what people should do, or what people need to accomplish. But the Bible is fundamentally different. It reveals what God has done and what God does. That is why the first page and the very first sentence of the Bible begin with God's work: God created. This is the starting point for understanding the Creator God.

Understanding Our Burdens

Many people, however, live without knowing how God works. Because they do not see His work, they carry the burden of believing, “I have to do everything myself.”

I have to plan well.

I have to prepare well.

I have to make the right decisions.

I have to take care of everything.

Life becomes centered on what I must do. But Psalm 90:10 tells us that even if we live seventy or eighty years, the strength of those years is still characterized by labor and sorrow.

“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow...”— Psalm 90:10 (KJV)

The Bible turns our attention away from what we can do and toward what God can do.

How Do We Meet God?

If God is the Creator, how can we meet Him? Do we need to climb a mountain? Do we need to go somewhere special? Do we have to see something supernatural?

The Bible shows us that we meet God through His Word. John 1:1 says:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”— John 1:1 (KJV)

The Word was God. This means that God's heart, wisdom, power, and will are revealed to us through His Word. When we receive the Word of God into our hearts, we begin to discover who God truly is.

The Power of God's Word

Think about a seed. A seed may look tiny and insignificant, but inside that small seed is life. Everything necessary for that plant to grow is already contained within it.

The Word of God is like a seed. A single Word from God may appear simple, but within that Word is God's wisdom, power, and life. When His Word enters our hearts, the Creator God begins to work within us through that Word.

That is why knowing the Bible is not merely about gaining religious knowledge. Through the Scriptures, we come to know God Himself.

God Alone Creates

Now consider the word create. To create means to bring something into existence that did not exist before. In its fullest sense, this belongs to God alone.

Human beings can make things, but God can create. If we want to make a table, we need wood, nails, tools, paint, and other materials. We take things that already exist and rearrange them into something new. But God is different.

The Creator God is not limited by existing materials or favorable circumstances. Hebrews 1:3 says that He is:

“...upholding all things by the word of his power...”— Hebrews 1:3 (KJV)

And Job 26:7 says:

“He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”— Job 26:7 (KJV)

God spoke, and through the power of His Word, creation came into existence. This teaches us something important about our own lives.

Finding Hope in God

We often think we can be happy only when we have the right circumstances.

If my family changes, I will be happy.

If my financial situation improves, I will be happy.

If my problems disappear, I will be happy.

We believe happiness must come from something we already possess. But the Creator God does not need the right circumstances in order to work. He can create what does not exist.

Even when there seems to be no hope, God can create hope. When there seems to be no joy, God can create joy. When our hearts are filled with darkness, His Word can bring light. That is the power of the Creator.

The Evidence of God’s Existence: Order

How can we know that God is real? One thing we can observe is order. Order requires wisdom and power. It does not simply appear by itself.

Imagine walking into a room where everything is perfectly arranged. The floor is clean, the furniture is in the right place, and everything has been carefully organized. We naturally understand that someone arranged it.

Now consider the earth. The earth moves through space while supporting billions of human lives, along with animals, plants, oceans, and entire ecosystems. It rotates consistently, travels around the sun, and exists within conditions that make life possible. Day follows night. Seasons come and go. The sun rises and sets. The tides move according to predictable patterns.

When we look at this extraordinary order, we see evidence of wisdom and power far greater than our own. The human body also displays remarkable order. The heart beats continually. The lungs breathe. The blood circulates. Countless systems within the body work together without our conscious control.

We do not have to wake up in the morning and remind our hearts to beat. All of these things point us toward the wisdom and power of the Creator God. A house tells us something about the person who designed and built it. In the same way, creation tells us something about its Creator.

As Romans 1:20 says:

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made...”— Romans 1:20 (KJV)

Through what God has made, we can begin to see His wisdom, power, and character.

Seeing God Through His Works

Some people say, “I cannot believe in God because I cannot see Him.” But there are many things we cannot see directly, yet we know they exist because we can see their effects.

Think about the wind. We cannot see the wind itself, but we can see trees moving. We can see leaves blowing across the ground. During a powerful storm, we can see the tremendous force of the wind through what it does.

Electricity is similar. We cannot normally see electricity itself, but when a light turns on or a machine begins to operate, we see the result of its power. In the same way, we may not see the Creator God with our physical eyes, but we can see His works.

We see creation. We see order. We see life. We see His wisdom and power. And most importantly, God has given us His Word so that we can understand what He has done and discover who He is. The Bible reveals God through His works.

Where Do We Find the Wisdom to Discover God?

A young child often does not fully understand the heart of his or her parents. The child may know that the parents provide food, clothing, and a home, but may not understand their sacrifices, concerns, or love.

As children grow older, their understanding changes. When they mature, marry, and begin raising children of their own, they often begin to understand their parents in a much deeper way. The parents' hearts were there all along. What changed was the child's understanding.

Our relationship with God can be similar. God's works surround us, but without wisdom we may fail to recognize Him. Imagine a difficult mathematics problem written on a board. To someone who does not understand mathematics, it may look confusing. But when a teacher explains the principle behind it, suddenly the solution becomes clear.

The problem did not change. Understanding changed. So where can we receive the wisdom that enables us to recognize God? From the Word of God.

When God's Word enters our hearts, it gives us a new way to see. Through His Word, we begin to recognize His works, understand His heart, and discover His love. The Bible was given to us so that we could know the Creator God.

The Creator God Can Work in Your Life

Genesis 1:1 is not merely telling us something that happened thousands of years ago. It introduces us to who God is.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

The God who created the heavens and the earth is still God today. He is not limited by our abilities. He is not limited by our circumstances. He is not limited by what we have or do not have.

We often look at ourselves and think:

“I don't have enough.”

“I can't change.”

“There is no way.”

“My situation is hopeless.”

But creation begins where human ability ends. When there was nothing, God created. When there was darkness, God said, “Let there be light.”

This is the God the Bible wants us to meet. As we continue through these Gospel Class lessons, we will discover more about who God is, what happened to mankind because of sin, and what God has accomplished for us through Jesus Christ.

The gospel is ultimately not the story of what we must do for God. It is the good news of what God has done for us. And that story begins with four simple words: “In the beginning God...”

Embracing the Journey of Faith

As we embark on this journey of faith together, let us remain open to the ways God is working in our lives. We can trust that He is always present, guiding us, and creating new possibilities.

In moments of doubt or struggle, remember that God is the Creator. He can bring forth beauty and hope from the most challenging situations. Let us lean into His Word and allow it to transform our hearts and minds.

Together, we can explore the depths of God's love and grace. We can grow in our understanding of His character and learn to see His handiwork in our lives.

Let us encourage one another as we seek to know the Creator God more deeply. Through His Word, we can find strength, hope, and the assurance that He is always with us.

In the end, our faith is not just about what we do; it is about who God is and what He has done for us. Let us celebrate the Creator God and His incredible work in our lives.
